Your Entrepreneurial Spirit

Say you are walking down a path and encounter a wall, what do you do? Do you go around it, over it, under it? What kind of wall is it? What is the ground like, could you dig under it?

There are two types of people that will look at this scenario very differently. The first person will do as I have, look at all options. The second person will simply that there is a wall in their path and decide that they must take a different path.

Maybe we should take a different approach? What if person two decided to wait for something to happen to the wall, thus allowing them to continue forward? How does this change the outcome for them?

The point is, as unique as we all are, we are the same. The real difference between you and I is how we decide to react to the various circumstances we experience in life. There are many factors that play into this ultimately making every human being unique in some way.

I recently went on a hike with a very eccentric, straight forward person that I have come to enjoy the company of. We were discussing life goals and ambitions and she made a statement that kind of struck me, “Having values, and living by them are two different things”. You might ask how does this relate to entrepreneurship?

Simply put, who are you? Can you answer that question? Are you person one that always finds a way and never accepts, or are you person two – easily discouraged and turns at the face of complexity and the unknown?

What my friend said to me really made me ask myself, “What are my values and do I even live by them?”. Honestly, I have yet to fully answer that question, but it has given me a push in the right direction. The one thing we can never do is go back. What has been done cannot be undone. For now, it is in the past and the past cannot be altered or changed.

There is a fighter inside of us all so find out who you are. Bring out your inner entrepreneurial spirit and stop waiting for something to happen to the wall. Figure out a way, find a way, because one exists. And on the other side of that wall is everything you have dreamt about and yearned for. A side of you exists that you have not explored yet and you must face your fears. You must get rid of your complacency and accept that the future is unknown and intimidating, but life won’t happen to you. You need to write your own script.

Last note, my recent hike served several purposes that weren’t fully clear to me until I had finished. I had forced myself out of my element and into a situation that I would have avoided at almost anything. The person whom accompanied me too had a fear in which she was forced to face. Part of this was due to our own faults, but nonetheless, we found ourselves in a less than desirable situation. Did we give up? Did we throw in the towel? No, we faced those fears and supported each other through them.

Even as an entrepreneur, you are always going to need someone by your side in some facet to pick you up when you can’t pick yourself up. Someday, if it hasn’t already, it will happen. And you’ll learn to appreciate time, and more-so the people that give their time to you.
